Freewheelin' Bob Dylan의 트랙리스트의 6분이 넘는 두 곡 중 첫 곡인 A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall입니다.

 

지난 포스트의 Bob Dylan's Blues에서는 순전히 유머의 용도로 온갖 에피소드와 심상을 쏟아낸 것과 대조되게 이번 곡은 Blowin' in the Wind나 Masters of War처럼 묵직한 메시지를 가지면서도 풍성한 이미지를 그려냅니다.

 

이런 점에서 이 곡을 아주 중요한 곡이라고 뽑는 사람이 많고, 또 그만큼 인기가 많은 곡입니다.

 

Blowin' in the Wind와 마찬가지로 뒷 소절로 갈수록 점점 더 심각한 메시지를 담고 있는데요, 고통을 받는 사람들과 이들이 겪는 무관심에 대한 이야기가 많이 나오게 됩니다.

 

이 점은 Blowin' in the Wind의 몇몇 소절들을 연상하게 합니다.

 

또한 이전 음반에서의 Song to Woody처럼 요지경 세상에 대한 노래인 것 같기도 하네요.

 

모든 소절은 my blue-eyed son이자 my darling young one에게 다섯가지 질문으로 시작합니다.

 

그럼 그가 질문에 대한 답을 쭉 진행하면서 겪은 것을 이야기하는 것으로 이어지는데, 이 대답들 한줄 한줄은 모두 동일한 멜로디를 가집니다.

 

이런 점때문에 대답 수가 자유롭게 늘었다 줄었다 할 수 있는 음악적 특징을 가집니다. (이런 음악적 특징 역시 미래의 포크록 Dylan 곡들에서 발견할 수 있습니다.)

 

모든 절은 제목처럼 호우(Hard Rain)가 내릴 것이라는 이야기로 정리가 됩니다.

 

노래가 나오던 당시 호우가 전쟁으로 인해 퍼붓는 미사일을 상징한다고 사람들이 많이 추측했으나 Dylan 본인이 부인한 바가 있다고 하네요.

 

1절의 질문은 '그간 어디있었냐?'이며, 그가 있었던 어딘가 고장난 장소들에 대한 절입니다.

 

2절은 '무엇을 보았냐'는 질문과 대답으로, 고장난 풍경과 피가 흐르는 광경들, 소년병, 보호받지 못하는 어린이 등에 대한 대답이 나옵니다.

 

3절은 '무엇을 들었냐'에 대한 것으로, 경고의 돌풍과 파도소리, 사람들이 고통받는 소리와 사람들이 웃는 소리, 아무도 들어주지 않는 사람들의 소리 등에 대한 대답이 나옵니다.

 

4절은 '누구를 만났는가'에 대한 것인데, 몸이 불타는 여인이나 무지개를 준 소녀 등 조금 더 초현실적인 심상이 등장합니다. 사랑에 상처받은 사람과 혐오에 상처받은 사람이 함께 등장하는 것이 재미있습니다.

 

마지막 결론부인 5절은 가장 긴 절로 '그럼 무엇을 할 것이냐'에 대한 절입니다. 여기에서 호우가 내리는 것에 대한 떡밥(?)이 회수가 됩니다.

 

우선 호우가 내리기 전 다시 세상으로 나가겠다는 다짐으로 시작하는 대답은 가난한 사람들이 많은 곳, 사람들의 식수에 흘러넘치는 곳, 집과 감옥이 맞닿는 곳, 영혼이 잊혀지고 사람들이 가진 것이 없는 그 곳으로 가겠다고 이어집니다.

 

그리고 그곳에 대해 사람들에게 증언하여 모든 자들이 볼 수 있도록 하고, 마지막으로는 바다로 가서 서 있겠다는 것을 다짐합니다.

 

그 증언의 노래를 부르기도 전에 이미 너무나 잘 알고 있을 것이라는 말로 마무리가 됩니다.

 

사실 Bob Dylan's Blues처럼 정확한 의미를 모두 파헤치려고 하면 너무 어려울 수 있으니 특별히 인상 깊은 구절들 위주로 감상하는 게 포인트 아닐까 싶습니다.

 

음율 분석

이 곡은 앞서 곡들과 다르게 각운을 맞추는 구조보다는 두운의 반복으로 각 문장을 엮는 방법으로 음율이 엮여있습니다.
